Derek was mum's older brother. Derek lost his life fighting for his country in the war during 1944. He wasn't spoken about much while mum was growing up as this was not the done thing. My Nan was devastated at loosing her only son and removed all memorabilia of him out of sight. It was only on the death of my Nan that Mum got out a photo of Derek.
